How to check and update PHP on SiteGround

Updated By Catch Digital2 min read

Short answer

SiteGround sets PHP per site in Site Tools, under Devs > PHP Manager. You can let SiteGround manage the version or pick one yourself. For PHP2Shell, see which version your site runs in Site Tools (steps below), then ask SiteGround to confirm the fixed release (8.2.35, 8.3.36, 8.4.27, 8.5.12) or a patched package is applied.

How to see your PHP version on SiteGround

  1. Log in to your SiteGround account, go to the Websites tab, and click Site Tools next to the site.
  2. Go to Devs > PHP Manager > PHP Version, where an info box shows your site's current PHP setup.

How to change your PHP version on SiteGround

  1. Log in to your SiteGround account, go to the Websites tab, and click Site Tools next to the site.
  2. Go to Devs > PHP Manager.
  3. Click the pencil icon, Change PHP version.
  4. In the window that opens, choose Managed PHP, or choose Change PHP Version Manually and pick the version you want.
  5. Click Confirm.
Choosing a version line (like 8.3) is not the same as getting its fixed release (8.3.36 for PHP2Shell). The host provides the release; ask them to confirm it.

Who updates PHP on SiteGround?

With Managed PHP, which SiteGround turns on by default for new accounts, SiteGround says it periodically moves your site to a newer default PHP version; if you pick a version manually, it says it will not update it for you. Ask SiteGround whether the latest PHP security release is applied.

Good to know

  • If you pick a version manually, SiteGround says it will not update it for you, so you have to keep it current yourself.
  • For sites on SiteGround's Standard PHP setup, the Select Domain dropdown lets you check each subdomain's setting.
  • Staging sites are checked from the Staging Sites tab.
  • SiteGround's article describes switching to Managed PHP in detail; the manual version list is shown in its screenshots, so labels in that window may differ slightly.

An email to send SiteGround

If you can't find the version, or you want written confirmation that the fix is in, send this to their support team:

Subject: Is our PHP patched for PHP2Shell?

Hi SiteGround support,

PHP released security fixes on October 21, 2026 for 2 critical flaws known as PHP2Shell (CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619).

Which exact PHP version does our site run on, and does it include the fix (8.2.35, 8.3.36, 8.4.27, 8.5.12 or later, or a patched package)? If not, when will it be applied?

Thanks,
