How to check and update PHP on Namecheap

Updated By Catch Digital2 min read

Short answer

Namecheap hosting runs on cPanel. Stellar and Stellar Plus plans use the Select PHP Version menu, and Stellar Business uses PHP Tweaks. For PHP2Shell, see which version your site runs in cPanel (steps below), then ask Namecheap to confirm the fixed release (8.2.35, 8.3.36, 8.4.27, 8.5.12) or a patched package is applied.

How to see your PHP version on Namecheap

  1. Stellar or Stellar Plus: In cPanel, open Select PHP Version in the Exclusive for Namecheap Customers section, or under Software on some servers.
  2. Stellar or Stellar Plus: The current PHP version is shown above the PHP extensions.
  3. Stellar Business: In cPanel, open PHP Tweaks in the Exclusive for Namecheap Customers section to see each domain and its PHP version.

How to change your PHP version on Namecheap

  1. Stellar or Stellar Plus: Log in to your cPanel account.
  2. Stellar or Stellar Plus: Scroll down to the Exclusive for Namecheap Customers section and click Select PHP Version, which is under Software on some servers.
  3. Stellar or Stellar Plus: Use the Current PHP version drop-down box to select the version, then click Apply.
  4. Stellar Business: Log in to cPanel and go to the Exclusive for Namecheap Customers section, then PHP Tweaks.
  5. Stellar Business: Select the domain from the drop-down menu and set the version you need in the PHP version section.
Choosing a version line (like 8.3) is not the same as getting its fixed release (8.3.36 for PHP2Shell). The host provides the release; ask them to confirm it.

Who updates PHP on Namecheap?

On Namecheap, you choose the PHP version and Namecheap provides the builds. Ask Namecheap whether the latest PHP security release is applied.

Good to know

  • These shared-hosting steps also cover the older Value, Professional and Ultimate plans; the PHP Tweaks steps also cover older Business SSD plans.
  • On Stellar Business, a version set in the Domain Settings tab takes priority over the Account Settings tab, and changes can take several minutes to show.
  • Namecheap's PHP Tweaks guide does not name the button that saves the change in its text.
  • On Stellar and Stellar Plus, an addon domain or subdomain can use a different version through its .htaccess file, but then starts with no PHP extensions enabled.
  • Namecheap says to contact support for versions below 7.0.
  • If you check your version with a phpinfo.php file, Namecheap says to delete it afterward for security reasons.

An email to send Namecheap

If you can't find the version, or you want written confirmation that the fix is in, send this to their support team:

Subject: Is our PHP patched for PHP2Shell?

Hi Namecheap support,

PHP released security fixes on October 21, 2026 for 2 critical flaws known as PHP2Shell (CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619).

Which exact PHP version does our site run on, and does it include the fix (8.2.35, 8.3.36, 8.4.27, 8.5.12 or later, or a patched package)? If not, when will it be applied?

Thanks,
